- Primary school teacher students have the option of enrolling in a research and development module in the course of their studies.
- An e-learning unit that forms part of the module «Teaching foreign languages» is developed in cooperation with the Department of French.
- lic. phil. Ruth Keller is carrying out research on standard-referenced assessment of productive second language skills (together with Sandra Hutterli of the French department) and is a member of the second language consortium of the EDK-project HarmoS.
- Käthi Staufer is involved in the research project «Applying standards of communicative competence to formative and summative assessment in foreign language teaching».
- Prof. Dr. Michael Prusse is involved in the evaluation of the bilingual matura (German-English) in the Canton of Zurich. The research project is run by the Institute of Pedagogy of the University of Zurich in cooperation with the Zurich University of Teacher Education.
- Brigitte Achermann, Keith Sprague, Käthi Staufer and Prof. Dr. Daniel Stotz are developing the new English materials «Explorers» for grades 4–6.
- Prof. Dr. Daniel Stotz and his assistant, Patrik Fischli are carrying out a research project in the National Research Programme 56 on «Multilingualism, Identities and Language Learning in Swiss classrooms and communities»; he is also responsible for the website Primary English Community.
- lic.phil.Ruth Keller is the project coordinator for the new English materials Voices for grades 7-9; Christoph Suter and Daniel Stotz are authors contributing to this project.
- Brigitte Achermann and lic. phil. Ruth Keller have coordinated an EDK/PHZH project: the new Englisch curriculum for grades 2-6 (primary school) in the eastern part of Switzerland.
